Ju-long
A young man who hails from a wealthy and powerful family. Ju-long inherited the dragon spirt the night he was born and his grandfather pass away. Ju-long is a very reserved young man due to all the pressure place upon him to uphold the life plan his family has designed for him. Over the course of the book, he wonders what type of life he would want.
Kari
A young lady that starts off the novel carefree and part of a very loving family. She receives the unicorn spirit after befriending a stranger that had come to her town. Her loving family changes after her father goes on a hunting trip, and slowly Kari wonders if she is curse due to everyone she tries to get close to turns dark due to the black void berries. Through the course of the novel, Kari learns to not let the trauma that she has endured change who she is becoming as a person.
Aureliano
A young man full of energy and personality. He comes from a popular family of village entertainers that abandon him after receiving the phoenix spirit from a stranger. Although he is outgoing, only his friends could see how he uses that as a shield in order to not get too attached to anyone again. After running in Kari in the novel, he realizes that it is ok to lower his mask in order to have a deep connection with his friends.
Akilah
A talent researcher devoted to finding out the meaning of these spirit and finding a cure for the infection caused by the black void berries. Akilah inherited her sypnx spirt from her loving aunt and was able to rely on her grandparents for guidance. At first she is a very shy and reserved character, only talking to Ju-long. As the story unfolds she learns to open up and to be more confident who she is as a person.
